What should I consider when purchasing a guitar?

Have a look at my Gear Tips page for information and ideas on what to purchase.

What do I need to learn the guitar?

As well as a guitar, I recommend getting a guitar case, guitar tuner app for your phone, plectrums, and a metronome. I suggest that you bring some spare strings just in case they break, but I will have some spares that can be purchased for £1.50 each.

What ages do you teach?

7 years and up.

Do you have a DBS certificate?

Yes, I have an enhanced DBS certificate, which is updated every year. Details available on request.

Are you qualified to teach children?

Yes, I have a PGCE (Secondary).

How much does a lesson cost?

Lessons are weekly and cost £11 for 30 minutes.

What is your cancellation policy?

I require at least 24 hours notice of cancellation. Cancellations within this time will be charged the full lesson fee. I will rearrange the lesson for another day – if you accept this, you will not lose the fee.

What size guitar should I get for my child?

Most of my younger students use a 3/4 size classical guitar with nylon strings. A 3/4 size electric guitar is also an option. Take a look at my Gear Tips page for ideas.

I want to give someone guitar lessons as a gift. Do you sell vouchers?

Yes. Vouchers are available for 30-minute lessons. Contact me to arrange pick-up of the vouchers.

What strings should I buy?

I recommend Ernie Ball Super Slinky for electric, Martin Strings for acoustic and D’addario Strings for Classical guitars. Have a look at my Gear Tips page for more options.

What is your location?

Penybryn Terrace, Pontllanfraith, Blackwood, Gwent, NP12 2EZ

Do you travel to people’s homes to give lessons?

No. All lessons are given at my home where I have a room dedicated to music.

What times are available?

You can check availability on my home page.
If I’m fully booked, I can offer one-off lessons (students sometimes cancel during the week); I could arrange for you to fill in for these lessons if you are waiting for a permanent time.

Do I need short nails?

Yes. There’s no way around it, you’ll need to have short nails on your left hand (right hand, if you’re left-handed) to allow you to make good contact when holding down notes.
